How to knit your pet's face into a sweater

A real knitted sweater, made of yarn on a knitting machine. That means your pet gets turned into stitches, and stitches come in very few colours.

The short answer

Cut your pet out of a photo, turn the face into a grid of stitches, and limit the whole sweater to 4 yarns from Printful's 36. Those 4 include the body colour and the collar, cuffs and hem, so the face itself gets two or three colours, and bold simple faces knit best.

The 4-yarn rule is for the whole sweater

This is the part that surprises people. The limit isn't 4 colours for the picture. It's 4 yarns for the entire garment, and the body colour and the trim (collar, cuffs and hem) count. Pick a red body with white trim and you have two yarns left for the dog.

So pick the body colour first, then let the face take what's left. On Ugly Sweater the site chooses the face yarns for you from the photo, steering away from colours too close to the body so a red sweater doesn't show through a golden retriever. If none of the face yarns stands out against the body, it swaps in white or black so the words don't vanish. You can tap any yarn to change it.

Solid or pixelated

Solid knits the face in flat blocks of colour. It's bold, it reads from across the room, and it's the default. Pixelated mixes stitches of different yarns in a regular pattern to fake in-between shades. It looks more like the photo up close and busier from far away.

Either way, stray single stitches get cleaned up. Printful's own advice is blunt about why: a lone stitch of a different colour looks like a stain.

Expect it to look blocky, on purpose

The design is laid out a little coarser than the knitting machine itself, so no detail ends up thinner than one stitch. Whiskers, collars and the shine in an eye mostly won't survive. Ears, the outline of the head and big patches of colour will. A photo where the face is big and the colours are clear does better than a cute photo from across the yard.

Frame it tight. You can knit just the face, head and shoulders, or the whole cut-out. The face alone, enormous, is the funniest.

Themes and words

The motifs are snowflakes, trees, reindeer, stars and hearts. On small sizes the extras drop out in order (the motif row, then the reindeer, the bands, the words) and the face always stays.

  • Fair Isle: bands of pattern, a motif row, reindeer and a tree.
  • Maximum tacky: motifs on a lattice all around the face and the words.
  • Portrait: the face, enormous, and not much else.
  • Words: two lines of up to 12 characters each in a chunky stitch font, like MERRY / WOOFMAS. The site can suggest puns from your pet's name.

Matching pet sweater and beanie

The same design knits a pet sweater, with the face on the dog's back since that's the side people see, and a knitted beanie. The beanie has no separate trim colour and its folded cuff stays plain, so keep faces and words above the fold.

Give it time

Knitting takes longer than printing, so the site keeps an honest holiday cut-off. For Christmas 2026 it's order by Wednesday, November 18 to arrive by December 23, once ordering is open. Later orders still get made; they just arrive after Christmas.

Questions people ask

How many colours can a custom knit sweater have?

Four yarns for the whole garment, chosen from Printful's 36. The body colour and the collar, cuffs and hem are part of the four.

Can I knit a person instead of a pet?

Yes. Ugly Sweater cuts out whoever is in the photo, pet or friend, and knits the face the same way.

Why does my pet look pixelated?

Each square in the preview is one stitch. Stitches are much bigger than pixels, so fine detail can't exist, which is also why ugly sweaters look the way they do.

Does my photo get uploaded?

The cut-out is made on your phone and only uploaded when you order. It's then checked by Google's AI (no famous people, nothing explicit) and kept privately for up to 90 days so it can be knitted.
