How to make a custom shaped pillow
A pillow cut and sewn along the outline of the thing itself, instead of a square with a picture on it. Most shapes work. A few never will.
The short answer
Start with an outline that is one solid piece, with no holes and nothing thinner than about three quarters of an inch, then print a border around it and have it cut and sewn along that border. Ours come in 10, 16 and 22 in and ship to US addresses only.
The one rule: it has to be one piece a machine can sew
A shaped pillow is printed fabric cut along the outline, sewn shut and stuffed. The sewing machine has to follow that outline all the way round. If part of the shape gets too narrow, the seam can't follow it.
The number to remember is about 0.75 in. That's roughly the narrowest neck or spike the print shop is comfortable sewing. Our pillows get there by growing the art outward with a printed border, so nothing in the cut is thinner than twice the border. On the 10 in Big Snack pillow the border is 0.45 in, so the narrowest part of the cut line is 0.9 in.
- One piece. A word floating next to the picture has to touch it, or it won't be cut.
- No big holes. A pillow can't have a hole in the middle, so Big Snack refuses a ring donut.
- No hairlines. Antennae, whiskers and straws either fatten up inside the border or disappear.
- Not cropped. If the thing runs off the edge of the picture, the cut gets a flat side, so Big Snack refuses food that touches the frame.
Shapes that work, and shapes that don't
Big, chunky outlines make the best pillows. A hot dog cut along the bun. A text bubble with its tail and the little read receipt underneath, all in one silhouette. A house cut along its roofline. A mountain ridge. Somebody's head with an award ribbon under the chin.
What fails is anything spindly or full of gaps. Forty thin fries turn into one white blob once the border fills the gaps between them, so Big Snack refuses that drawing before anyone pays for a pillow. A bicycle is mostly holes. A cocktail with a long stirrer ends up with a stubby, padded stirrer.
The border is part of the design
The cut lands on a printed edge, not on the edge of the art. That border is what keeps the shape sewable, and it's also the frame you see on the sofa, so pick its colour on purpose. Big Snack offers edges named after the counter: napkin white, wax paper, ketchup, mustard, relish, diner blue and sprinkle pink. Big Head uses a thick white edge, like the cardboard heads people hold up at games.
Sizes, and how sharp it will look
The 10, 16 and 22 in sizes are the square the shape is fitted into, so the finished pillow is that long on its longest side and whatever the shape makes it on the other. A one-line text bubble on the 16 in pillow comes out about 15 x 8 in.
Sharpness depends on what the art is. Drawn shapes like the text bubble and the mountain ridge are vector, so they're crisp at every size. AI paintings are about one megapixel, so a 22 in pillow gets roughly 50 pixels per inch: a bit soft up close, fine from across the room. A plain phone photo is the weakest, which is why Big Head switches big pillows to a drawn style.
The same outline can also be cut as a die-cut sticker or a fridge magnet, in 3, 4 or 6 in.
Where to make one
Every shaped pillow on Made Up Merch uses the same cut-and-sew rules. They differ in where the outline comes from.
- Big Snack: type your usual order and get it as one giant food.
- Left On Read: a text message, receipt and reaction included.
- Home Sweet Pillow: a drawing of your house, cut along the roof.
- Big Head: a head, huge, with a ribbon.
- The Skyline: the mountains you can see from a spot on the map.
Questions people ask
Can a shaped pillow have a hole in the middle?
No. The pillow is sewn around its outside edge only. Small gaps get filled in by the border, and Big Snack refuses a design with a big hole, like a ring donut.
How big is a 16 inch shaped pillow?
16 in on its longest side. The other side depends on the shape: a tall house is close to square, a one-line text bubble is about 15 x 8 in.
Why was my design refused?
Usually because part of it is too thin to sew, it splits into two pieces, or it touches the edge of the frame. The site tells you which one before you get to checkout.
Do shaped pillows ship outside the US?
Not right now. The shaped pillow, the die-cut stickers and the magnets ship to US addresses only.
